About the drive
Shimla is the closest proper hill station to the tricity, about 3¼ hours away. The taxi heads out through Panchkula and Pinjore to Kalka, enters Himachal at the Parwanoo barrier, and climbs the four-lane NH-5 through Dharampur and Solan to Shoghi and into Shimla. The four-laning has cut the drive time, but the stretch above Solan still narrows in places.
Timing matters more than distance here. On Friday evenings and Saturday mornings, queues form at Pinjore and the Parwanoo barrier. Leave before 7 am on weekends, or travel on a weekday, and the drive is smooth. Dharampur and Solan are the usual tea stops. Kasauli is a short detour from Dharampur, and the Timber Trail ropeway is right at Parwanoo.
Mall Road and the Ridge are closed to ordinary vehicles. The driver drops you at your hotel or the nearest permitted point on Cart Road or Circular Road, and the Lakkar Bazaar lift and porters take you up. Send your hotel name when booking.
Because it is so close, Shimla works as a same-day round trip: Kufri in the morning, Mall Road in the afternoon, and back to the tricity by night. From late December to February, Kufri and Narkanda get snow, and the police may allow only vehicles with chains beyond Shimla.

Questions about this route
Can we do Shimla as a same-day trip from Chandigarh?
Yes. Leave by 7 am, visit Kufri and Mall Road, and you are back by 9 to 10 pm. Book it as a round trip; it is charged per kilometre with the daily minimum.
Can the taxi drive up to our hotel on Mall Road?
No. Mall Road and the Ridge are restricted for ordinary vehicles. The driver drops you at the nearest permitted point on Cart Road or Circular Road, and you can take the Lakkar Bazaar lift or a porter up. Hotels below Mall Road can usually be reached directly.
How do we avoid the weekend traffic at Parwanoo?
Leave the tricity before 7 am on Saturday, or travel on Friday afternoon before office traffic. Coming back on Sunday, leave Shimla by 2 pm to beat the evening queue at Pinjore.
Can we stop at Kasauli or Chail on the way?
Yes. Kasauli is a short detour from Dharampur, and Chail is reached via Kandaghat. Each adds two to three hours with sightseeing, and we add the extra kilometres to the quote.
