About the drive

Dalhousie is a long day from Chandigarh, about 7½ hours. The usual road goes through Ropar and Hoshiarpur to join NH-44 near Dasuya, continues to Pathankot, and then takes the Pathankot–Chamba road through Dunera to Banikhet. From there a short final road leads up to Dalhousie.

About five of those hours are plains driving. The last 80 km from Dunera are a winding hill road, and that is where elders and children feel it. Pathankot is the natural lunch stop and the place to take a motion-sickness tablet before the climb. For a gentler trip, many families break the journey with a night in Dharamshala or Pathankot, or do Dalhousie as part of a Dharamshala–Dalhousie circuit.

Khajjiar, the meadow often called India's Mini Switzerland, is about 22 km from Dalhousie, and the Kalatop forest is on the same road. Most families give it half a day. Dainkund peak and the Chamera lake near Banikhet are the other easy outings.

May and June are the busiest months, when the plains are at their hottest. Snow usually comes in January and February. After heavy snowfall the Dalhousie–Khajjiar road can close for a day or two, and the Banikhet climb can be icy in the mornings, so winter trips need flexible plans.

Questions about this route

Is Chandigarh to Dalhousie too long for one day with elders or children?

It is about 7½ hours, with the last 80 km on hill roads. It can be done in a day with an early start, but many families prefer a night in Pathankot or Dharamshala. Tell us and we will quote it as a two-day trip.

Can we combine Dalhousie with Dharamshala?

Yes. Dalhousie to Dharamshala is about 4 to 5 hours via Nurpur and Kangra. A Chandigarh – Dharamshala – Dalhousie – Chandigarh circuit over 4 or 5 days is a popular plan, quoted as a round trip.

Can we see Khajjiar on arrival day?

Usually not; after a 7½-hour drive it is better to rest. Khajjiar and Kalatop fit comfortably into the next morning.

Is it safe to go to Dalhousie in January?

Yes, with a flexible plan. Fresh snow can close the Khajjiar road for a day or two, and mornings can be icy near Banikhet. The driver times the hill section for daylight hours.
